Lieutenant Khalil Hoshino “Starfield”

Khalil is tall and wiry, and despite his skinny build, he is physically strong. Standing 1.8 meters tall and weighing in at 75 kilograms, his lean frame is built to squeeze in the most cramped spaces. Because he is a Lanthanite, his smooth skin and boyish face belies his actual age. The decades long exedus When he was in Starfleet, he tied his brown long curly hair back. As a civilian, he enjoys letting it fall past his shoulders in unruly waves.

Khalil presents as a young mid-20 human, which leads many who meet him for the first time to underestimate his experience. He possesses an unpretentious wisdom which grounds him in even dire circumstances. His eyes are kind but you can tell that he has seen worlds burn. After such a long career already in Starfleet he is accustomed to but loathes the pomp and ceremony. He speaks plainly with everyone with sincerity.

Khalil is a highly disciplined individual; trained as an engineer, he is deeply accustomed to following procedure. His extensive experience with various fleets and ships has provided him with a wealth of knowledge and distinct philosophies regarding ship and systems construction. When it comes to managing his people, Khalil is a dedicated leader. Experience has taught him that even the best technology fails when the crew is distracted or fatigued. He is a fierce advocate for his people and will defend them to the last. He is also a firm believer in transparency with his crew, citing the belief that it is more difficult to complete a mission if the crew does not know “the why”.

As a student of engineering Khalil aspires to always improve his ship, meet new people, and expand his knowledge. He is constantly reviewing the latest developments and seeing what can be applied to his current platforms. He is interested in continuing his mastery of command and building the best crew.

In his free, Khalil enjoys cooking and growing vegetables. A hobby that became source of grounding for him, gardening he found was something that provided a peace and nutrition for anyone who wanted to join him.

Khalil was born on Earth in the year 2147. His mother Akari had lived all over this interesting planet for nearly a century before meeting a human named James. After a very brief courtship they soon found out they were to have a son. Akari wanted only to show her child that while Earth and humanity seemed to be growing out of its infancy, James worried for their safety. After millennia of quiet coexistence Akari saw the xenophobia movement on Earth gain some traction. The decision was made to leave. 16-year-old Khalil jumped at the prospect of travel, to explore the quadrant and escape the creeping boredom of immortality, eventually settling in the El-Aurian colony 35,000 light years from Starfleet and the infantile Federation of Planets. It took 14 years to make the journey during which Khalil completed his schooling and integrated himself into the transport’s maintenance team.

Living among El Aurians was a change to be sure. Khalil had been sixteen when they left Earth but his parents found that living with another long-lived species allowed them to make deeper connections. Unfortunately James died in 2221 at age 104.

The incursion of the Borg into El Aurian territory was slow and disorganized at first; stories of random encounters with cube-shaped vessels were documented but the government did not provide many facts to the public. In 2275 however the Borg Collective launched a devastating assault on El-Aurian-held space. Akari and Khalil were able to escape on board one of a dozen transports that made it out of the sector.

2275-2293: The First Career (Starfleet Enlisted Track)
Returning to the Alpha quadrant took nearly 20 years and conditions on the transports were not great. A fire or simple disease could wipe out an entire ship’s complement. The El Aurian defeat spread across the quadrant quickly and they found many worlds they once lorded over were not so receptive to a fleet of damaged ships and tired refugees. Khalil did his best to keep the ship he lived on operational; making deals in the fleet’s black market could keep the air recyclers running a while longer but in return, he sacrificed food and his time paying the less scrupulous passengers their due for parts. Scavenging became a standard practice as these simple transport ships were pushed well beyond their operating limit. Desperate for any kind of relief, some of the refugees started whispering about a doorway to another plane of existence.

The Nexus Cult was built around an ancient energy ribbon fabled to travel through the galaxy, bringing people to a realm where one’s every desire was fulfilled. In actuality the energy ribbon functioned more as a temporal transporter buffer, holding those within it in a dream state outside of time. Those obsessed with locating the Nexus fanatically chased phantom sensor readings plotting a jagged course, expending precious resources that their ships could not spare. They began their journey with over 3,000 refugees on 12 ships; by 2293 only 2 remained. As they approached the Terran system, Nexus cultists commandeered both ships and intercepted the energy ribbon. The ships’ crews were able to send a distress call but the gravimetric distortions of the ribbon trapped both ships and began breaking down the hull. Cultists and passengers alike began to phase in and out of space-time. Just before the hull collapsed, a Federation starship beamed 47 passengers away. Akari was not among them…

2293-2305: After witnessing for himself the power of Starfleet vessels and the creativity of the crew, Khalil enlisted in Starfleet as a basic crewman. While physically appearing as a late-teenage human he had decades of experience on various ships, experience which granted him a second class petty officer rank after a shortened training period. Khalil took to starship engineering quickly; many of the principles were the same with much less practical drift. From 2293-2305 he served aboard a Sydney-class transport, the USS Nash (NAR-2010-5). Although not a starship he enjoyed the work. Availability of parts was a bit of a culture shock to him after twenty years of scrounging and making defective parts work. He thoroughly enjoyed interactions with his crew mates and passengers.

2306-2318: After twelve years of ferrying colonists to far-flung parts of the quadrant, Khalil felt the need to put down roots for a while. He found solid ground working for the Corps of Engineers on a colony construction site.

2318-2333: Khalil served as a mobile fleet supervisor aboard the converted Antares-class freighter Hephaestus.

Assigned to the Oberth-class USS Yosemite in 2333, the ship presented unique challenges; its cramped crawlways and seemingly hidden equipment kept the maintenance teams very active. In 2335 the ship was specially fitted to map the plasma disturbances of The Badlands. Upon their initial approach, the warp engines attracted the plasma storms causing extensive damage. Repair teams painstakingly replaced overloaded relays and burned plasma conduits and Khalil was promoted to Chief Petty Officer for his dedication to the completion of the mission.

Starfleet Technical Services Academy (Mars) 2341-2343: For two grueling years Khalil mastered his Level 3 engineering rating. He attended certification and extension classes on Damage Control Theory and Application, Subspace Geometry, and Transporter Interdiction. His final class was Hostile Environment Combat Engineering. Operating almost exclusively in orbit over Mars, the class trained him to breach a hull in a zero-G/high-radiation environment, tap into enemy computer systems with simple tools, and maintain a covert presence all the while.

In early 2347 now Chief Warrant Officer Hoshino was offered a position on board the USS Tecumseh (NCC-14934). An Excelsior-class vessel patrolling the Cardassian border was a big departure from the freighters and transports to which he’d become accustomed. Exposure to combat forced Khalil to shift his mindset from routine maintenance and comfort to major repair and some improvisation. It was during the Cardassian Border War that he found himself not only serving as Assistant Chief Engineer, but also commanding the combat engineering teams on the ground. Whether it was setting up signal amplifiers, ground-based artillery, or assisting with the rescue and recovery of soldiers and civilians, Khalil began spending less time on board overseeing maintenance teams and more time in the field.

By 2355 the war between the Federation and the Cardassian Union had ground to a stalemate, and the initial ceasefire was not signed until 2366. Khalil spent it with the “Ship Breakers,” a Starfleet Corps of Engineers detachment that breached enemy ships and disabled them from within. As their senior warrant officer he planned and ran the breaches themselves, second to their commanding officer, Lieutenant Commander Petrov. With Khalil cutting the way in, the detachment crippled several Galor-class cruisers and a Mokac-class shipyard. During one such operation Petrov was mortally wounded; Khalil took command and pulled them out, but Petrov died before they reached their home ship. A warrant officer had no standing to hold a unit in the field, so Khalil was issued a battlefield commission to Lieutenant. Being an officer had never been the goal, but he took to leading a new generation of recruits.

By the time of the signing of the formal armistice with Cardassia in 2367, Khalil became a well respected member of the crew and those close to him. He was known for being a guy that did his best to get the job done and keep everyone alive best as possible.

With 20 years of service as an officer, he had seen several crew rotations on the ship. There were jokes about him being a permanent fixture to the craft. However not long after, Starfleet Academy assigned Khalil as an instructor for Advanced Tactical Training.
