Blackwatch: XSP-22 "Lance"

XSP-22 Lance precision particle projector
XSP-22 “Lance” — precision particle projector, unmarked configuration.

The XSP-22 “Lance” is a full-length precision particle projector built for the shot that has to count — a hardened target, a shielded emplacement, a piece of equipment that has to stop working from a long way off. It is a deliberate, patient weapon, and it is issued to operators who are expected to take one shot rather than many.

Its firing cycle is slower than anything else in the rack and it draws heavily on its cartridge. That is the trade the design accepts in exchange for reach and accuracy.

Configuration

  • Role: Long-range precision, shield penetration and anti-equipment
  • Configuration: Full-length precision energy weapon
  • Power source: High-capacity unmarked sarium-krellide energy cartridge
  • Energy system: Dual isolated capacitor banks
  • Emitter: Long-axis focused variable particle projector
  • Operation: Standalone, with external tactical data optional

Firing Modes

Precision Pulse — Low-dispersion long-range shot, and the mode the weapon exists for.

Shield Probe — Analyses how a defensive field answers, without committing to a full discharge.

Piercing Pulse — High-density discharge against armour, equipment and resistant shields.

Adaptive Precision — Shifts phase, frequency, particle bias and pulse geometry between shots.

Capacitor Dump — Simultaneous discharge of both banks for maximum output. It leaves the weapon empty and hot.

Environmental Safeguards

  • Heavy radiation hardening
  • Gravimetric compensation
  • Subspace-distortion compensation
  • Electromagnetic interference resistance
  • Ionised-atmosphere compensation
  • Partial dampening resistance
  • Dual precharged capacitor banks
  • Redundant emitter-control channels
  • Graceful degradation under system damage

Austere Mode

Disabled: advanced targeting, predictive compensation, shield analysis, external data links, and adaptive modulation.

Retained: manual optical sighting, basic range adjustment, capacitor discharge, a fixed-profile precision pulse, and manual output control.

Stripped back this far the Lance is a plain long rifle with a good sight, which is still a great deal more than nothing at four hundred metres.

Targeting

  • Passive optical magnification
  • Multispectral observation
  • Passive ranging
  • Atmospheric compensation
  • Gravimetric correction
  • Subspace distortion correction
  • Shield-response analysis

Anti-Adaptive Capability

The Lance refines individual shots against what the previous one told it — reflection, absorption, dispersion and harmonic response.

Its adaptive precision system then changes the discharge characteristics between shots, which complicates Borg-style shield adaptation. A defence that has learned the last shot has not necessarily learned the next one.

Deniability

The Lance carries no Starfleet markings, no Federation serial numbers, no LCARS systems, no Federation targeting software, no Starfleet-standard emitter hardware, and no Starfleet-pattern power-cell interfaces.

Its internal components are also deliberately varied from those of the other Blackwatch weapons, so that two recovered systems cannot be tied to one another as easily as to one origin.

Design Emphasis

Strengths. Range, precision, shield analysis, performance against hardened targets, and environmental compensation.

Weaknesses. A slower firing cycle, heavier power draw, more emitter heat, more complex maintenance, and reduced effectiveness if the advanced targeting systems are heavily disrupted.

Variants

XSP-22R “Lance Recon” — Lighter and lower-signature, for reconnaissance teams.

XSP-22H “Lance Heavy” — Enlarged capacitors and a reinforced emitter for anti-equipment work.

XSP-22C “Lance Countermeasure” — An expanded adaptive-defence and shield-analysis package.
