Khalil sat on the edge of the bed, his eyes drifting across the stripped mattress and the bare walls of his quarters. For just over three years, this tiny corner of San Francisco had been his home. Now, his life was consolidated into a single duffel bag and an impact-resistant footlocker sitting by the door.
The sharp chime of the door broke his reverie.
"It's open!" he called out.
The doors parted, revealing Kaelen standing in the doorway. A massive duffel bag—nearly as tall as her petite frame—was slung over her back. A brilliant, familiar smirk broke across her face. "Hello, Professor Babyface! The guy downstairs said I would find you up here. I see you recycled everything that wouldn't fit in your locker."
Khalil stood up, the weight of nostalgia lifting as he met his friend and former covert ops teammate. "My mother was something of a packrat," he replied dryly. "I’m still finding collections of hers."
Kaelen dropped her bag just inside the threshold and stepped into the room. When they embraced, Khalil lifted her off her feet.
"Put me down, I'm a Chief and a grown woman," she protested, though there was no real heat in her voice.
"Grown or not, you're still the little sister I never had," Khalil smiled, setting her back down.
Kaelen stepped back, her eyes narrowing as her operational instincts started kicking in. "Still a softy, huh, LT? So, why did you transfer me all the way here from the Cardassian frontier?"
"I requested your transfer to pitch you a job." Khalil reached over to his footlocker, picked up a secure PADD, and passed it to her.
"A job?" Kaelen tapped the screen. The device flashed a quick bio-scan of her face before unlocking, displaying a detailed engineering schematic. "Another Excelsior-class starship? You never could turn down a run on those old ships."
"There's something about them I just can't resist," Khalil murmured. "But scroll down. There's a reason I need you on this patrol."
As Kaelen’s thumb swiped across the glass, the playful demeanor vanished. Her eyes scanned the structural differences and the ship's engineering layout, "Wait. The Rubicon isn't a routine border cruiser. It's a ghost ship."
"Command needs a presence along the Romulan border that doesn't trigger a diplomatic incident every time it drops out of warp," Khalil explained, crossing his arms. "To the rest of the quadrant, she's an old patrol bucket. But underneath, she has the teeth and enough operators to deploy multiple units. They've given me the green light to head up one of the teams."
He gestured to the screen. "Look at the auxiliary craft."
The schematic shifted to a compact, predator of a transport.
"The Cormorant-class transport," Kaelen read softly, her voice carrying a mix of professional awe and appreciation. "Dual micro-fusion reactors... ablative armor... localized sensor-scrambler. This isn't a standard runabout,
"It’s an armored breach and extract craft."
"Since when did Starfleet get so serious?"
"When we lost 39 ships in a single engagement, that’s when,” Khalil’s response smacked of bitter cynicism. “After Wolf 359 the intelligence community petitioned Starfleet for a series of independent ships to maintain the flow of information. They considered it but Federation Counsil denied us direct control of starships; but they did agree that external threats to the Federation are likely going to be emboldened by the losses suffered. Starfleet can no longer afford to have battlegroups stationed everywhere to fight. Under the Danube project the Cormorant was developed.” Khalil reached over the PADD and pressed a button near the bottom. A wireframe projection of the Cormorant floated overhead.
“To the casual observer the ship is unremarkable but this thing is way more than a bus. We’ll have onboard reconnaissance suites, sensor scrams and transport inhibitors"
The projection flickered and then disappeared as Khalil looked into Kaelen's eyes.
I need someone who can bypass a Romulan sensor grid, rig an explosive charge out of replicator fluid, and keep a transport flying when the hull is taking heavy fire. I need you, Chief. I need someone who handles the dark as well as I do."
A slow, dangerous grin crept onto Kaelen's face. She tossed the PADD onto the bare mattress and swung her heavy duffel back over her shoulder. "You shipped me out here, offer me a job, and bought me a brand-new toy to play with? You always did know how to plan a party, LT. I’m in."
"Good," Khalil smiled, lifting his footlocker. "Because our pilot is already waiting for us down at the auxiliary docks and the Galaxy is standing by to take us to Starbase 234”
“Let's go pick up our ride." Kaelen turned to and gestured for Khalil to lead the way.
They stepped off the transporter pad at Docking Slip 12-B, a bustling, industrial sector that smelled of ozone from plasma exhaust.
The freshly commissioned Ensign Jaxom Dane stood at the edge of the observation platform, watching the Vighross as it was towed to the flight line. He was twisting a golden OCS graduation ring on his finger, nervous energy radiating off him until he caught his reflection. Its matte gray finish drank the harsh dock lighting.
"Beautiful, isn't she Dane?" Khalil said yelled the whine of the engines as they powered up.
Jaxom snapped around, his eyes tracking the rank pips on Khalil and Kaelen's collar before throwing a textbook Starfleet salute. "Lieutenant. Chief," he said, his voice formal but buzzing with excitement. "Ensign Jaxom Dane reporting, Sir. I've already cleared our plan up to the Galaxy with the yard master and preflight is in progress. The Vighross is ready when you are.”
Kaelen walked right past him, mesmerized by the stealth runner engine cowlings.
She turned to the Khalil like as giddy school child. "They’ve plated the exhaust ports with Duranium-Osmium matrix! We’re not going to feel a thing when this bird hits atmo.” Khalil smiled “Our hope is using materials and method familiar to the Romulan sensors will fool them if they detect her at all.”
Kaelen turned her attention to Jaxom, "You’re the one who's supposed to fly this, Ensign?"
"Y.y Yes Chief! ," Jaxom replied, a touch of nervousness and defensive pride. "Professor Hoshino... If the specs on this PADD are even half accurate…. I'm ready to put her through her paces. Chief" Kaelen could barely keep her stern look before leaving his field of vision.
"Easy Pup, The Chief doesn’t bite too hard. She wants to make sure you can take a little attitude and still get us out in one piece.”
Jaxom nodded as they loaded their belongings into the ship.
“The Vighross is our ticket into places Starfleet technically isn't allowed to go" Khalil said, tossing his duffel down next to the Ensign's gear.
The nervous energy vanished from Jaxom's eyes, replaced by the cool confidence endemic to pilots. "Sir, you give the word, and I’ll drive ."
Khalil swiped his PADD against the security console. The gangway hissed shut and the engine frequency increased
"Welcome to the team, Ensign. Let's go."
The Vighross cleared Earth's upper atmosphere into the void of space. In the darkened cockpit, the three watched as a colossal, silhouette of a Galaxy-class starship filled the forward viewport.
Khalil passed a data file to the pilot's console. "Hail the Galaxy and get ready to take us into the main hangar bay, We're riding first class out to Starbase 234."
"Hailing now, sir," Jaxom said, his fingers flying across the interface. He tapped the communications link. "This is Transport Vighross, requesting approach vector for a manual docking, clearance code Alpha-One-Nine."
A crisp voice crackled over the comms speaker. "Vighross, this is Galaxy Flight Operations. We have you on manual approach. Maintain your approach angle, speed at one-quarter impulse, and yield to the departing shuttlecraft. Welcome aboard."
"Acknowledged, Flight Ops. Vighross out." Jaxom glanced over his shoulder at Khalil with a sharp grin. "First class it is, sir. I’ve never parked inside a Galaxy before."
Kaelen unbuckled from her engineering station and stood up, leaning over Jaxom’s chair to watch the massive hangar doors yawn open, revealing the cavernous, brightly lit flight deck.
"Don't get too comfortable under their soft lighting and plush carpet, Ensign," Kaelen warned playfully.
With precision, the young pilot guided the grey nose of the transport through the shimmering atmospheric barrier field. The Vighross glided into the massive bay, passing rows of standard shuttlecraft like a shadow. Easing the thrusters down, Jaxom perfectly caught the mooring locks. The ship settled onto the hangar deck with a barely perceptible hum.
He powered down the primary systems, dropping the transport into a quiet standby mode. Turning back to Khalil, a confident look settled over his features. "Secured from flight, sir. Next stop, the Romulan frontier."
Khalil unlatched his harness, a serious but satisfied expression in his eyes as he grabbed his PADD. "Excellent work, Pup. We have a two-week cruise ahead of us before we reach the station. Let's use this time to familiarize yourself with your team and ship. At Starbase 234, the training wheels come off."
