Blackwatch: Selection, Induction & Oath

No one is assigned to Blackwatch. Every member volunteers, and volunteering is only the beginning. The path onto a team is deliberately demanding, because the standards the work requires cannot be waived, and the trust the team places in one another cannot be extended to anyone who has not earned it. Every member walks the same path.

Volunteer

Blackwatch personnel volunteer. No one is casually assigned to Blackwatch because command needs another body. Any qualified member of the crew may submit for consideration, formally requesting to be evaluated for the team, and it is understood that most who submit will not be selected.

Qualification

Those accepted for evaluation face selection and qualification — a battery of tests and assessments measuring the candidate against the standards the work demands. Candidates are evaluated for professional expertise, judgment, physical suitability, psychological suitability, discretion, the ability to work within Blackwatch's specialist structure, and operational reliability.

The qualifications are exacting and the failure rate is high by design. Blackwatch would rather leave a seat empty than fill it with someone not equal to it.

Training and Evaluation

Those who pass move into training with Blackwatch and their prospective team — a period of working alongside them, learning their methods, their discipline, and their people, and proving they can function as part of the team rather than merely beside it. Skill alone is not enough. The team must be able to trust the candidate with their lives, and trust is proven, not assumed.

Selection for evaluation does not guarantee acceptance. Command may require additional training, delay acceptance, require another evaluation, reassign a candidate, or deny qualification outright.

Final Induction

Final induction requires all of the following:

• Security screening
• Professional qualification
• Operational evaluation
• Medical clearance
• Psychological clearance
• Doctrine and security instruction
• Execution of the Blackwatch Covenant
• Implantation of the Blackwatch security implant
• Final Blackwatch command approval

A candidate who refuses the implant cannot complete final induction.

The Security Implant

Every fully inducted Blackwatch operator receives a classified security implant. It is deliberately covert and designed to be difficult to identify, and it is not intended to expose anyone's Blackwatch affiliation.

The implant is not a tracker, a communications device, an identification transponder, a locator, or a routine authentication system. Its sole purpose is to serve as a last-resort safeguard against catastrophic compromise of protected Blackwatch information.

The implant answers to the operator first. It can be triggered deliberately, by a means known only to inducted personnel, when the operator judges that compromise is imminent and unavoidable. That decision rests with them alone and requires no authorization from anyone.

It also carries an independent fail-safe capable of acting on its own, responding to predetermined physiological conditions associated with sustained hostile interrogation, extreme coercion, neurological exploitation, invasive extraction of information, or comparable catastrophic compromise — so that the safeguard still holds when the operator is no longer able to act.

Ordinary fear, pain, combat stress, injury, and exhaustion are not intended to activate it. The exact thresholds and capabilities remain classified. Under catastrophic compromise conditions its final safeguard may result in permanent incapacitation or death.

This is a security mechanism, not a disciplinary punishment. Unauthorized removal, disabling, alteration, or deliberate examination is prohibited. Leaving Blackwatch does not automatically require removal of the implant.

The Oath

Only after all of this comes approval — the team accepting the candidate as one of their own. Approval is not a formality; it is the team taking the candidate in. Only then does the candidate take the Oath and sign the Covenant. From that moment, and not before, they are Blackwatch.

The Oath is sworn once.

I, [name], volunteer for Blackwatch of my own will, knowing what it asks and what it may cost. Let this be the last time my name is spoken in this work, for from here I am known by another.

I serve for my skill, and I place my expertise in the hands of my team as they place theirs in mine. In the field I answer to the mission and to those who lead it, for we are bound together in the work.

I will hold what I know in silence. I will carry no name but the one I am given, wear no mark that betrays us, and leave nothing behind that can be traced to my ship, my people, or the peace we are sworn to keep.

And should I fall where I cannot be brought home, I accept that I will be let go — that my name will be unwritten and my service unspoken — so that the line holds and the war does not come. I would rather cease to exist than be the reason it begins.

I give myself to the team, to the mission, and to the peace, and I ask nothing in return but to be counted among them.

This I swear, knowing it may be the last thing I am ever known to have sworn. From this moment, I am Blackwatch.
