Klingon Timeline
A dated chronology of the Klingon Empire, from Kahless to 2393.
1. About This Timeline
This is a dated chronology of the Klingon Empire as the Federation records it. It follows the same eras as History of the Klingon Empire, which tells the story in narrative form. Each era opens with a short note and then lists its events in order.
Dates before 2151 are Klingon tradition, not Federation record, and are given only where tradition is clear. Dates from 2151 onward come from Federation records, with Klingon and Romulan sources where they agree. Where an event touches the Romulan Star Empire, the date given here matches the Romulan section of this reference; see Timeline. Where a date is uncertain, the entry says so. For how the Empire is governed, see The High Council and the Chancellor.
2. The Founding and the Long Ages
Klingon tradition places the founding of the Empire about fifteen centuries ago. Almost nothing between the founding and first contact can be dated by the Federation.
| When | Event |
|---|---|
| About fifteen centuries ago | Kahless the Unforgettable forges the first bat’leth, the Sword of Kahless, kills the tyrant Molor and unites the Klingon people. He gives them the code of honour that still governs them. |
| About fifteen centuries ago | Kahless promises to return and points to a star. The clerics of Boreth, a world circling that star, begin their long watch. |
| Not dated | The Empire grows beyond Qo’noS under Emperors and great houses. The houses that sit on the High Council today trace themselves to these ages. |
| Not dated | The Hur’q, the “outsiders”, invade Qo’noS, plunder the Great Hall and carry off the Sword of Kahless. Klingon sources give no fixed date to outsiders. |
| About three centuries before 2369 | The line of Emperors ends. The Empire is ruled by the High Council and its Chancellor. |
3. First Contact (2151 to 2154)
The Empire met Earth by accident, and the meeting did not go well for long. These years also brought the Empire a plague of its own making.
| When | Event |
|---|---|
| 2151 | The Klingon courier Klaang crash-lands on Earth while hunted by Suliban agents. The starship Enterprise (NX-01) returns him to Qo’noS. The evidence he carries helps the High Council expose a plot against the Empire. |
| 2152 | The captain of the Enterprise is tried by a Klingon tribunal on Narendra III and sentenced to the prison asteroid of Rura Penthe. He is recovered from it. |
| 2152 to 2154 | Relations between Earth and the Empire sour. |
| 2154 | Klingon experiments with human Augment genetic material set loose a plague. The cure leaves many Klingons without cranial ridges, a change passed on to their children for generations. |
4. The Long Rivalry (2154 to 2293)
For more than a century the Federation and the Empire were rivals and often enemies. A Klingon Neutral Zone lay between them. Most of what the Federation recorded in these years was conflict.
| When | Event |
|---|---|
| 2245 | Federation and Klingon forces fight a battle near Donatu V, close to the disputed Sherman’s Planet. |
| 2267 | Klingon forces occupy Organia, and the two powers move to the edge of full war. The Organians stop the fighting and impose the Organian Peace Treaty on both sides. |
| 2268 | Sherman’s Planet is disputed under the treaty’s rule that a contested world goes to the side that can develop it most efficiently. |
| 2268 | Starfleet intelligence reports that the Romulans are flying ships of Klingon design, a sign of some exchange of technology between the two empires. How long it lasted and how it ended is not recorded. |
| 2285 | A Klingon commander is killed in fighting over the secrets of the Genesis Device. |
| 2286 | The Klingon ambassador demands before the Federation Council that the Starfleet officer responsible be handed over to the Empire. The Federation refuses. |
5. Praxis and Khitomer (2293)
One year turned two old enemies into allies. It began with a disaster and ended with a treaty.
| When | Event |
|---|---|
| 2293 | Praxis, the Klingon moon holding the Empire’s key energy production facility, explodes. The atmosphere of Qo’noS is poisoned, and the homeworld is expected to become unable to support life within about fifty years. |
| 2293 | Chancellor Gorkon seeks peace with the Federation. He is murdered aboard his ship, Kronos One, by conspirators. |
| 2293 | Two Starfleet officers are wrongly convicted of the murder in a Klingon court and sent to Rura Penthe. |
| 2293 | Gorkon’s daughter Azetbur becomes Chancellor and keeps to his course. |
| 2293 | A Klingon Bird-of-Prey is fitted with a prototype cloak that can fire while cloaked. The usual rule, for Klingon and Romulan cloaks alike, is that a ship must decloak to fire. |
| 2293 | The Khitomer conference makes peace between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. A conspiracy of Klingon officers, Starfleet officers and a Romulan ambassador, Nanclus, tries to stop it and is exposed. |
| 2293 | The Khitomer Accords are signed, joining the Federation and the Klingons in a formal alliance. The Accords redraw the border between them. A Federation-Klingon Neutral Zone remains along the new line. |
6. The Alliance Years (2293 to 2364)
The first decades of the alliance were quiet between the Federation and the Empire, and anything but quiet between the Empire and the Romulans. After the Tomed Incident the Romulans broke off contact with the Federation, but the Klingons felt the weight of Romulan attention in these years far more than the Federation did.
| When | Event |
|---|---|
| 2293 onward | The Empire begins the long work of saving Qo’noS after Praxis, at peace with the Federation. |
| 2311 | The Tomed Incident between the Federation and the Romulans. The Romulans withdraw from contact with the Federation for fifty-three years. Their hostility toward the Klingons continues. |
| 2344 | Romulan warbirds attack the Klingon outpost on Narendra III. The USS Enterprise-C is destroyed defending it. The Klingons honour the sacrifice and have never forgiven the Romulans. |
| 2346 | A Romulan attack on the Klingon colony at Khitomer kills thousands. A Klingon traitor, later known to be Ja’rod of the House of Duras, had given the Romulans the colony’s defence codes. |
| 2346 | Worf, a boy of the House of Mogh, survives Khitomer and is raised by a Starfleet family. |
7. Duras and the Civil War (2365 to 2371)
The truth about Khitomer, buried for twenty years, shaped the politics of the Great Hall in these years. The Romulans, newly returned to the galaxy in 2364, tried more than once to break the alliance from outside.
| When | Event |
|---|---|
| 2365 | A Starfleet officer serves aboard a Klingon warship under the officer exchange program between Starfleet and the Klingon Defense Force. |
| 2366 | The House of Duras accuses Mogh of betraying Khitomer. The High Council, knowing the traitor was of Duras’s house but fearing civil war, lets the charge stand. Worf accepts discommendation. |
| 2367 | Chancellor K’mpec dies of poison. He has named the Starfleet captain Jean-Luc Picard Arbiter of Succession. |
| 2367 | Duras kills the envoy K’Ehleyr. Worf kills Duras under the right of vengeance. Gowron becomes Chancellor. |
| 2367 | Romulan agents program a Starfleet officer to kill Vagh, the Klingon governor of Krios, to break the Federation-Klingon alliance. The attempt fails. |
| Late 2367 | Lursa and B’Etor of the House of Duras put forward Toral, Duras’s son, as heir. The Arbiter rejects the claim, and the civil war begins. Gowron restores the honour of the House of Mogh, which fights for him. |
| 2367 to 2368 | The Romulans secretly supply the House of Duras. Commander Sela directs much of the Romulan effort. |
| 2368 | Starfleet ships form a tachyon network along the Klingon and Romulan border. It exposes the Romulan supply convoys, and the Romulans withdraw. The Duras forces collapse and Gowron holds the Great Hall. |
| 2369 | The clerics of Boreth present a clone of Kahless. He becomes Emperor, a spiritual leader with no power over the High Council. The throne had been empty for some three hundred years. |
| 2371 | Lursa and B’Etor are killed. |
8. The Break and the Dominion War (2372 to 2375)
In four years the Empire went to war with the Federation, made peace again, fought the largest war in its recorded history, and changed Chancellors by combat in the Great Hall.
| When | Event |
|---|---|
| 2372 | A civilian council takes power on Cardassia. The Klingons claim the Changelings are behind it, and Gowron invades the Cardassian Union. |
| 2372 | The Federation condemns the invasion. Gowron withdraws the Empire from the Khitomer Accords. The Federation-Klingon war of 2372 to 2373 begins. |
| 2372 | The House of Mogh, which will not support Gowron, loses its lands and its seat on the High Council. |
| 2372 | The Sword of Kahless is found in the Gamma Quadrant. Its finders let it go into space rather than see it divide the Empire. |
| 2373 | A Changeling who had taken the place of General Martok is exposed. The real Martok escapes from a Dominion prison. |
| 2373 | The Dominion takes Cardassia into itself. Gowron restores the Khitomer Accords. The break of 2372 is over. |
| Late 2373 | The Dominion War begins. Klingon and Starfleet ships fight side by side, in some cases as joint fleets; one is known as the Fourteenth Joint Fleet. |
| 2374 | The Romulan Star Empire enters the war on the side of the Federation and the Klingon Empire. |
| 2374 | Klingon forces take part in the first allied offensive into Cardassian space, at Chin’toka. |
| 2375 | The Breen join the Dominion. Their energy weapon cripples allied ships but not Klingon ones, and for a time the Klingon fleet holds the line almost alone. |
| 2375 | Gowron takes personal command of the war. Worf of the House of Martok challenges and kills him in the Great Hall. Martok becomes Chancellor. |
| 2375 | The Dominion surrenders after the battle of Cardassia. |
9. The Recovery Years (2375 to 2382)
Under Chancellor Martok the Empire rebuilt after the war, as the Federation’s ally. Across the Romulan border the Empire’s old enemy fell into crisis.
| When | Event |
|---|---|
| 2375 onward | The Empire rebuilds its fleets after heavy war losses. Full figures are never published. |
| 2377 | The Federation, the Klingon Empire and the Romulan Star Empire set up a joint recovery initiative of twelve ships each, led by the USS Viola. Its crews clear the battle zones along the Cardassian border and return the dead to their homeworlds. Klingon crews serve alongside Romulan ones. |
| 2379 | The Romulan Senate is killed in its chamber by Shinzon’s followers. The Romulan Star Empire turns inward. |
| 2379 to 2382 | The Silence, as Romulans call it. There is no Romulan Senate, and Romulan patrols along the borders fall away. |
| Early 2380s | Nausicaan raiders work near the Klingon border. |
| 2382 | The Restored Senate first sits. |
10. The Raids (2382 to 2390)
While the Romulan Empire looked inward, Klingons of lesser houses looked across the border. The High Council neither sanctioned their raids nor stopped them. The Romulans’ return to the line made them costly.
| When | Event |
|---|---|
| About 2382 | Young warriors of lesser houses and some ship captains begin raiding Romulan border holdings, for old grievances, glory and plunder. Many of the raids are led by sons of the House of Gharvel. |
| From 2383 | A Klingon Defense Force contingent trains with Starfleet on Mars in fighter tactics. |
| 2386 | The joint recovery initiative stands down after most of a decade. |
| 2387 | The first Romulan patrols return to the line. |
| 2389 | Ardhal tr’Vesuin becomes Praetor and sends the Romulan patrols back in strength. The raids become costly. |
| 2390 | At the tri-border near Starbase 24, where the Federation, Klingon and Romulan borders meet, raiders from a freighter outpost called the Hub strike Romulan and Klingon shipping. Each empire blames the other, and both demand that the Federation act. |
| 2390 | Talks with the Romulan ambassador V’rel and the Klingon general T’Sok fail. T’Sok accuses the Federation of violating Klingon borders with sensor sweeps and leaves saying the Federation has no honour. |
| 2390 | Starbase 24 is being rebuilt. |
| After 2390 | The raids taper off. The Romulans have not forgotten them. |
11. The Empire in 2393
The present is a time of watchfulness on the Romulan frontier and quiet calculation in the Great Hall.
| When | Event |
|---|---|
| Early 2390s | Starbase 24 is completed. |
| 2393 | Martok is still Chancellor, eighteen years after taking office. The great houses think about the succession. |
| 2393 | The House of Vreth, on the High Council, presses for a harder line with the Romulans. The House of Tarkesh, also on the Council, wants the alliance kept steady. |
| 2393 | The Narendra Command, based at Narendra III, holds the Nevrha stretch of the frontier under General Kortaq of the House of Vreth. |
| 2393 | The alliance with the Federation holds, and the officer exchange continues. |
12. Chancellors and Emperors
The Federation does not hold a full list of Chancellors. The table below gives only those whose dates are on record. Between Azetbur and K’mpec there is a gap the Federation cannot fill.
| Office | Name | Dates |
|---|---|---|
| Emperor | Kahless the Unforgettable | The founding |
| Chancellor | Gorkon | To 2293; murdered |
| Chancellor | Azetbur | From 2293 |
| Chancellor | K’mpec | To 2367; died of poison |
| Chancellor | Gowron | 2367 to 2375; killed in challenge |
| Emperor (spiritual) | Kahless, the clone | From 2369 |
| Chancellor | Martok | 2375 to the present |
13. Gaps in the Record
The largest gap is everything before 2151. The Federation knows Klingon tradition about Kahless and the Hur’q, but it cannot date the Hur’q invasion, the end of the line of Emperors or the founding of the High Council. The second gap is the half century after Khitomer, when the alliance was too quiet to leave much of a record. The third is the inner life of the High Council since 2375, which the Federation knows mostly by its results. For the raids of the 2380s in particular, Federation entries rely on Starfleet observation and on what Klingons have said since, not on any Council record. See The High Council and the Chancellor and Klingons and Romulans.
