Physical Description

Reed is solidly built and comfortable in it, an athlete's frame gone a little heavier with age and work, broad through the shoulders, with dark hair he keeps short and a few days of stubble more often than not. He has the kind of face that goes easily to a grin. His hands are a working man's hands, scarred and sure, and he moves without any particular hurry. Around the things he works with, rushing gets people killed, and it shows in how deliberately he does everything.

Personality & Overview

Reed is warm, blunt, and hard to rattle, and he runs on a steady current of dry humor that doesn't shut off even when things get bad, especially not when things get bad. He came up in a job where a loss of nerve gets people killed, and somewhere along the way he decided that if he was going to spend his life with his hands inside things that could vaporize the ship, he'd rather do it laughing than sweating. The jokes aren't him not taking it seriously. They're how he takes it seriously without cracking.

He says what he thinks, plainly, and he'd rather tell you the truth than tell you what you want to hear. It reads as gruff for about five minutes until people realize there's no meanness under it, just directness and a genuine, easy warmth. He likes people, likes working with a good team, and has a knack for putting nervous ones at ease, largely by refusing to be nervous himself.

Underneath the loose surface he is deeply, seriously good at his work, and he knows it, without needing to prove it to anyone. The calm is real. When it counts, when there's a door that won't open or a charge that has to be perfect or something volatile between the team and where they need to be, Reed is the steadiest hands in the room and the last person who'll panic.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths. An exceptional breach and demolitions specialist with a matter/antimatter engineering foundation that makes him almost unnervingly comfortable around unstable, high-consequence hardware. He understands energy, containment, and catastrophic failure from the inside, which is exactly what breaching hostile systems and setting charges demands. He's calm under pressure to a degree that steadies everyone around him, and he's genuinely good with people, the kind of teammate who makes a hard job feel survivable.

Weaknesses. The humor can read as not taking things seriously to people who don't know him yet, and now and then he'll crack a joke at a moment someone needed him to just be quiet. His comfort around danger can tip into a calm that looks like recklessness from the outside, though he'd argue, correctly, that he knows exactly where the line is. And he's blunt enough that he occasionally says the true thing when the diplomatic thing would've served better.

Hobbies & Interests

Still an athlete at heart. He plays whatever the ship has going, follows the sports he grew up on, and is usually the one organizing a game in the gym or on the holodeck when the crew has downtime. He'd argue a good pickup game does more for a team than any amount of forced morale exercises, and he's not wrong. Otherwise he's low-maintenance: keeps in shape, keeps his gear squared away, and is happy in his own skin.

Personal History

Reed was a sports kid, the type who spent every spare hour of his youth on a field or a court and figured, for a while, that was where his life was pointed. He was good, good enough to think about it seriously, and what he took from all those years wasn't a trophy shelf so much as a temperament: how to stay loose under pressure, how to read a situation fast, how to be one part of a unit that wins or loses together. When the athletics didn't turn into a career, he enlisted in Starfleet at eighteen, more for the structure and the challenge than any grand plan, with no interest in a commission.

Engineering wasn't a childhood calling; it was where his aptitude landed once he was in, and it turned out to suit him better than he expected. He found his way fast to the part of it most people are happy to leave to someone else: matter/antimatter reaction systems. Warp cores, containment fields, the injectors and the magnetic constrictors, the high-consequence end where a mistake isn't a mistake, it's a hull breach and a memorial service. He was good at it, and more than that, he was calm at it, which is rarer and worth more, and the same nerve that let him take a big shot with the game on the line let him keep his head with a reaction running hot.

His first berth out of training was the USS Sabik, a Miranda-class ship, where he pulled reactor watches as a junior crewman and learned the trade under senior engineers who didn't hand out praise. He was steady, quick, and unbothered by the parts of the job that made other people sweat, and he moved up through the enlisted grades on merit rather than time. By his mid-twenties he'd transferred to the USS Kepler, an Excelsior-class ship, and made a name for himself in a way nobody wants to: during a containment fault that could have cost the ship, Reed stayed at his post and rode the problem down to a controlled shutdown while the compartment around him was screaming for evacuation. He talked the whole time, mostly jokes, mostly to the two nervous crewmen he refused to let panic. The ship lived. He got a commendation he rarely mentions and a reputation he can't shake: the man who doesn't come apart.

That reputation, and that expertise, are what eventually pulled him toward direct-action work. Someone in Starfleet noticed that a man who stays calm with his hands inside a failing warp core is exactly the kind of man you want setting charges and breaching hostile systems under fire, because breaching and demolitions are the same skill set pointed a different direction: energy, containment, and controlled catastrophic failure, on purpose, exactly where and when you want it. He cross-trained for field operations aboard the USS Weymouth in the late 2360s, took to it, and qualified, an engineer who could open a door that didn't want to open and defeat whatever was waiting behind it.

Reed earned his Chief Petty Officer's rating in 2366 after more than a decade in Starfleet engineering. The promotion brought another insignia and more responsibility, but very little interest on Reed's part in changing the kind of work he actually did. He remained a hands-on specialist through his time aboard the Weymouth, continuing to work matter/antimatter systems while expanding his field qualifications into breaching and demolitions.

He advanced to Senior Chief Petty Officer in 2370 shortly before his posting to the Rubicon. The promotion reflected the experience and operational record he had already built rather than a change in career direction. On Team Alpha he's still the man who gets the team through whatever is in the way and defeats whatever hostiles are waiting on the other side, accompanied by a flat joke and steady hands while everyone else is holding their breath.
