Recon Specialist Second Class Marn Trosk “Prophet”

Zakdorn, but not the build the name usually calls to mind. The layered facial pads still ridge his temples and cheeks — there is no mistaking the species — but he is lean where his people tend to run heavy, trained down hard for the work. Recon means carrying your own weight over distance and still being able to move when it matters, and he made himself into someone who can. What sets him apart isn't the conditioning, though; it is stillness, which is unusual in someone his age. He can hold a position without shifting for the better part of a day, and does, and the economy of him — no wasted motion, no fidget, eyes always a half-second ahead of where you expect them — is the first thing anyone competent notices.

Trosk does not find the enemy so much as deduce them. Given the ground, the doctrine, and a read on who he's up against, he can tell you the three places an ambush has to be, because on that terrain against that adversary there is nowhere else it makes sense. He treats the shot itself as the least interesting part of the work. The interesting part is already over by the time the rifle comes up.

He states odds, not opinions, and he is right often enough that the arrogance is earned rather than merely tiresome — though at twenty-six it lands as both, and he has not yet decided to mind. He is the brake to the team's gas: where the assault wants to move now, Trosk wants the thirty seconds to confirm the setup he already knows is right, and the maddening thing is that he usually is. It makes him hard to argue with and harder to like, and he wears the second half like it costs him nothing, which is its own kind of tell.

The crack in him is people. He models terrain and enemy intent flawlessly and reads the room in front of him terribly — certain about ground, lost about the person he just insulted without noticing. The certainty is partly armor. Once, the model held perfectly and the variable it could not account for was a man doing something no rational actor would do, and it cost the team. He does not talk about it. He has simply decided, since, that the irrational is the one enemy he cannot out-think, and he watches for it now the way other men watch a treeline.

He enlisted at eighteen rather than take the officer track his aptitude scores pushed him toward, which surprised the people who tested him and no one who knew him. Command wanted his mind in a planning cell; he wanted the field, and the field wanted a scout who could see a day into the future. He made his name unusually young on the Cardassian border reconnaissance element — the operator who called the setups before they sprang, who walked a valley once and mapped every bad option in it.

He rose fast on merit — faster than his years — and then ran headlong into the fact that he is congenitally unable to be wrong quietly. He has corrected senior officers in rooms where being right mattered less than being agreeable, and it has kept him off the commission track they keep trying to steer him onto and he keeps refusing. At twenty-six he is a Petty Officer 2nd Class who reads ground like an operator twice his service, which is precisely the profile Blackwatch was built to use: specialty over rank, the man worth listening to regardless of what his collar or his age says. The unit does not need him to be liked. It needs him to be right, and to be forward of everyone else when he is.
