Checks and Balances - Part 2
Oksana was quiet and allowed both of them the space to speak and explain what they had done. Her blue eyes followed their hands and where they indicated, committing each to memory whether she truly wanted to or not.

“Very good.” She looked to Solana then, “I would like each person to have a small emergency medical kit in their gear as well that could be used to stabilize them in most situations. Do you think you could come up with something that would suffice?”

She gave a nod “Oh yes, of course. I can give an allowance of certain items depending on the mission. Things to help stay awake or slow metabolism. Anything for emergency treatment like bleeding will always be standard inside. I’ll make sure everyone’s set up before missions and they’ll all be stocked the same.” Solana appreciated benign polled on her expertise.

Reed smiled “Make sure there’s something in there to cauterize a stub when I pull back what was my hand.” In truth he was always safe and had never come close to losing any parts. He was very disciplined and very safe with explosives.

Oksana chuckled softly and shook her head. “A little bag of dirt to rub in it would suffice I’m sure, wouldn’t it?”

She looked at both of them then, the smile fading just slightly but still remaining. “Do either of you have any questions for me?”

Reed smiled at the comment he received back. “Well, I know elements of teams are still being decided, however are there any training schedules or rotations you would like us to participate on? I have been making sure to work on anything I can think of and work with other members of Blackwatch, but if there is anything in particular you want focused on, just let me know. The Romulan front is new to me.”

Vey spoke up as well “I have worked some on combat training, enough to be useful wherever I'm told, but I've focused heavily on emergency medical training and scenarios. There's a lot I've considered and would you be opposed if I continued that focus versus learning how to shoot someone two hundred meters away?”

Oksana looked at Reed first, one perfectly shaped brow lifting just slightly. Her blue eyes moved over his handsome face slowly, then settled on his own eyes. “Do you know how to keep things from blowing up as well as you know how to blow them up, Chief?”

“If not better, ma'am. My whole career I've been an energy and anti matter specialist, so keeping things in harmony is something I've worked to become a perfectionist at.” Even when it meant working through difficult feelings of his own. “Knowing what to do, when, and how much is the most important aspect. Measure twice, cut once.”

There was something about the way she looked at him for a split second that might have made him feel like he had been read like a report, but it was so fleeting it was hard to pin down. She nodded, “For you then, I might suggest dipping your toes into some science rotations if they are working on anything that might be relevant to what you do. Maybe you’ll invent your own personal brand of explosive.”

Reed nodded in agreement “I am pretty sure we have a few of the tactical science folks working on something, I’ll go around and ask. It would be neat to have more toys to play with anyways. It may not be the best idea to let me mix matter and anti matter, things could get uglier than we want.” He zipped up his bag and set it aside “I think I’ve got everything set up for now.”

“Good.” Oksana then turned to Solana, her intense blue eyes studying the other woman much as she had done with Reed. “What kind of hand to hand combat training do you have, if any?”

Solana shook her head “Not much, just Akido. I figured it was better to be able to redirect someone instead of fighting them with force, given my size and my occupation. I’m a decent shot with a phaser but again I’m not looking to be the point man either. So while I’ll certainly fight, I admit that my tactics are more focused on being passive.” They had been enough to pass her certifications for them. Not by much, the bar was quite high. But they had fulfilled the requirements.

“Aikido is a good step, but I want you to look into some training programs for Brazilian jiu-jitsu as well. It will make up for what aikido lacks in its teachings and give you an ability to actually subdue and bring down someone larger than you.” She paused, then continued, “In my time in the field I have seen many tactics, including turning our own against one another or poisoning the mind so friends are no longer recognizable. I want you to be equipped should a patient of yours lash out at you and you are unable to chemically subdue them.”

The words did not sit well with Vey. Her oath to first do no harm rang in her mind. At the same time, she knew the other woman was right. She knew at some point this fork would appear, she just hadn’t expected it so soon. “I’ll make sure toi get into a training rotation soon, I’ve been focusing quite a bit on emergency medicine and equipment utilized in the event we can’t bring anything electronic. Never know what we’ll run across. Pemborke is a good surgeon but if folks don’t make it back to him, it won’t matter anyways.”

Oksana nodded and offered another smile, her expression reassuring. “I have no problem with you keeping that as your main focus, but I also want you to have the tools to defend yourself up close in case it comes to that and you are alone.”

She looked between the two again. “Any other questions for me?”

Bishop shook his head, Solana followed suit. “I think we’re good unless you have any sort of specific schedules you’d like us to follow. Otherwise we’ll make sure to keep you updated accordingly” she added.

“Nothing at this time, but I will keep you both updated as things change with more personnel and information available over the next few days. I will leave you both to what you were doing.” She gave another smile, gentle and kind, then offered a nod before she turned and walked away with an eerily silent step.

Solana waited until the other woman left “She’s forward, but seems fair. I guess I’d better start getting ready for more combat classes.”

“You’re always welcome to join me and Idaris if you want, having another female partner for her is probably best” Reed added. “Otherwise make use of the training suites.”

“We’ll see, but for now, I’ve got a shift to cover in Sick Bay. Till next time, Nitro.”
